Wellness Corner - Boosting your Immune System
This time of year is typically associated with the cold and flu season. There's a lot you can do to help avoid getting sick or reduce the days that you are sick.
To stay as healthy as possible:
Avoid Sugar. Sugar will suppress the immune system, leaving your body vulnerable to germs and viruses that cause illness. Xylitol or Stevia are good alternatives for sweetening.
Get enough sleep. Sleep is the time when your body heals and performs the functions that fight illness and disease. Adults need about 8 hours and children and teens need more like 9-11 hours.
Eat regularly and healthy. Don't skip meals, that's your body's fuel to fight illness. Try to include 9-13 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Fruits and vegetables are the cleaning and boosting fuel for your body. They help boost the immune system and clean out toxins and neutralize free radicals, all important elements to staying well. If you can't or won't eat that many fruits and vegetables each day, then you need to supplement with a whole food supplement like Juice Plus+, which contains 17 different fruits and vegetables and whole grains. Dr. Ross recommends Juice Plus+ because it the only product of it's kind with high caliber of research backing it up. It's an easy step to take to ensure your body has the ammunition it needs to fight off illness and disease everyday and it's been proven to improve immune system function*. Dr. Bruce Ames says, "You might as well stand unprotected in front of an x-ray machine than not to get enough fruits and vegetables each day." That's just how important they are... no kidding!
Drinks lots of water. Our lungs and nasal passages dry out quickly in the winter... keeping them moist by drinking water will help keep you well and fight infection.
Reduce stress. The effects of stress on immune system function and overall level of wellnes have been studied and well-documented. Stress levels should be monitored closely! Stress affects your overall wellness level and susceptibility to infection in two important ways:
-
Chronic Stress can raise cortisol levels and weaken our immune system and make us more susceptible to colds and the flue, as well as more serious health problems like heart disease, diabetes and other diseases.
-
When we're under stress, health may suffer because we don't always make other healthy lifestyle choices like getting enough sleep, exercise and healthy food in our diet, which also makes us more likley to become ill.
Try to take time out for fun and relaxation and exercise. Practice deep breathing exercises, and let go of the small details and things that really won't matter next month or next year. No one can get it all done... so have realistic expectations and prioritize and be willing to let some things go.
Laugh. Many studies have shown that laughing is very healthy and healing. Be sure to have some fun... be around people that make you smile, watch a funny movie or comedy show.
If you feel something coming on, be sure to take action right away:
Don't wait until you get really sick: when the scratchy throat, runny nose or the blahs come around, double up on your Juice Plus+ and take some Optibiotic, Lobelia or Thymativ supplements. (Available at Dr. Ross' office).
Rest and don't over-do. Even when you're starting to feel better... one more day of rest will do wonders.
Don't run right out to the doctor for antibiotics... let your body's immune system build and strengthen by getting some use. A fever and runny nose are signs your body is fighting the illness. Typically it takes 3 days to get sick, 3 days to be sick and 3 days to get better. You can cut this time down significantly by resting and taking the above mentioned supplements to assist your body naturally.
Drink plenty of fluids, preferrably clean pure water. Your body will need a lot of it to do it's job.
The old adage is true... feed a cold, starve a fever. You don't want to eat when you have a fever because the body is using so much energy to create a fever to kill the virus, that it can't digest food, and it will typically be vomitted back up to get rid of it.
*Researchers at the University of Arizona found that after just 80 days Juice Plus significantly imporived the activity of T-cells, B-cells, and natural killer cells and in the levels of cytokines. Results of this study were published in the journal Integrative Medicine in 1999. So the time to start taking Juice Plus+ is before you start getting sick or before you have a disease. Help your body stay well by adding some prevention in your life!
Patient Success Stories
Here's some of our recent success stories from our office.
Female patient reports her occiput adjustment helped tremendously with her migraine that medications were not touching.
Mother reports after doing lymph node work on child with strep, swollen glands were gone and mucus was expelled right away.
69 year old woman reports after 6 visits able to walk 1 mile without pain and sleeping better.
Patient with damaged diaphragm is breathing better with her chiropractic care.
Patient reports she is "a thousand times better" with a scapula (shoulder blade) adjustment.
Female patient reports sleeping better while on her back since receiving chiropractic care.
Patient says she noticed she is no longer having stress headaches since receiving care.
Male patient fell and hurt himself but noted that he felt he would have been worse off if he had not been under wellness care. (Prevention!)
Elderly patient reports wrist pain was gone after her adjustment.
Patient reports headache was gone by the time she got home from her adjustment.
Female patient exclaims she is no longer taking pain medications after just 2 visits.
Female patient notes she always gets headaches with weather changes, but not since started to receive chiropractic care.
All of these patients above had one thing in common... they had subluxations that were preventing their bodies from working properly. They did not know they had subluxations because subluxations are usually painless and have no symptoms themselves. They subluxations were keeping them from being as healthy as they could have and should have been.
Health is natural. If you know of someone who is not as healthy as they should be, recommend they have their spine checked for subluxations by a chiropractor today! And above all -
if you know of someone with a child or have a child yourself, have their spines checked for subluxations
... you could prevent a life time of sickness by keeping their nervous system free of the nerve interference caused by subluxations from the very beginning.
New Year? It depends
Different cultures celebrate the start of the new year at different times. The Romans celebrated on March 1st. That is why September, October, November, December are named the 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th months. January 1st was not accepted as New Year's Day until 1600 in Scotland and 1752 in England.
Resolution for 2006 - Adjust your subluxations
Subluxations? What are they?
Too much stress can cause subluxations in your body - areas of decreased communication or dis-harmony. There are two kinds of stress: macro-stress such as accidents, falls, dental work and intense emotions and micro-stress which are repeated small movements or constant emotional stress that gradually wears down your resistance. You can get a subluxation from a difficult birth or a childhood fall and never feel or function right. Neurological and other health problems have been traced to spinal damage at birth.
Nearly everyone has a subluxation in their body, many are painless, and yet they can quietly undermine your health just as termites can quietly undermine the foundation of your home. By the time the kitchen floor collapses, it's too late to call the exterminator. By the time symptoms appear, a certain amount of subluxation damage may be irreversible. For that reason periodic spinal examinations to locate and correct vertebral subluxations should be a part of every family's health routine.
Chiropractors specialize in locating and correcting or eliminating your subluxations. Correcting silent subluxations today might save you and your family from diseases that, later in life, could not possibly be ignored.
Flu vaccine unpopular among pregnant women
It's criminal - doctors are telling pregnant women to decrease the amount of tuna they eat because of mercury in fish and yet at the same time telling women to be injected with a vaccine full of mercury.
Thankfully most pregnant women are refusing this shot that's full of mercury and that's been linked to autism and many other neurological disorders. The CDC reports that 12% of pregnant women were immunized in the 2003-2004 flu season (1). One can only hope that number will decrease to zero for 2005-2006.
Interesting Health Facts

When raspberries or strawberries are made into jam, their cancer-fighting antioxidants increase by 50 percent, according to a study published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry. But don't wait too long to finish the jar. After six months, the antioxidant levels drop off.
Chiropractic and spinal research
Remember, a person with any kind of health problem needs chiropractic. Feel free to forward these studies to others.
Colic and difficulty breast-feeding. A 12-day-old male would not feed on the right breast. Mother reported he seemed "fussy" and had excess gas. The child's occiput had a limited range of motion and the atlas vertebra was found to be fixed. A chiropractic adjustment was performed to the atlas. The mother breastfed the infant at the office immediately following the adjustment with no problems nursing on the right breast. (6)
Disc herniation and chiropractic
. A 44-year-old man was diagnosed with a herniated cervical disc by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). He suffered from severe neck pain with constant burning, left arm and shoulder pain and left shoulder pain with nerve pains in the index finger of the left hand. The patient also had diminished grip strength on his left hand. By the 5th week of care the severe neck, shoulder and arm pain were completely resolved. The patient's numbness and grip strength improved consistently during the next 6 months. An MRI 14 months later revealed complete resolution of the herniated cervical disc. (7)
Migraine and chiropractic
. 127 migraine sufferers were divided into two groups. One group received chiropractic adjustments while the others were in the control group. Chiropractic patients had significant improvement in migraine frequency, headache duration, disability and medication use and 22% of them reported more than 90% reduction in migraines after 2 months and 50% reported significant improvement in severity of migraine episodes. Humor
Waiter at the therapy cafe: "Our specials tonight are repressed duck, filet of sole searching, and my favorite, shrimp basket case. For desert we have strawberry shortcomings and banana split personality. Start you off with a self-expresso?"
Last week I bought a box of Animal Crackers. It had a label that said, "Do not eat if seal is broken." I checked inside, and sure enough....
Thoughts to Ponder
Good health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die.
Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day; teach a person to use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks.
Some people are like a Slinky.....not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs.
All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism.
Why does a slight tax increase cost you two hundred dollars and a substantial tax cut saves you thirty cents?
Panexa
SIDE EFFECTS
Most patients (2%) tolerate treatment with PANEXA well, especially when compared with prisoners of war of comparable size and weight. However, like all drugs, PANEXA can produce some notable side effects, all of which are probably really, really terrific and nothing that anyone should be concerned about, let alone notify any medical regulatory commission about. Most side effects of PANEXA, or their sufferers, are usually short-lived, and are rarely so fatal that the remains can no longer be identified, provided good dental records are available.

Enough with the humor already. Don't worry, we'll come back in 2007 with more jokes than you can shake a broom at. Some of them might even be funny.
But especially remember to have a joyous and loving new year. Please stop by for a spinal checkup and bring your friends and relatives. Everyone needs to be free from the damages caused by subluxations - even chiropractors go to chiropractors so we can function at our best when we take care of you.
